Root Canals

Root canal treatment relieves tooth pain and lets you keep your natural tooth.

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. When deep decay, a crack or an injury infects it, a root canal removes the infected tissue, cleans the inside of the tooth and seals it.

Most people are surprised by how comfortable the process is. The treatment is what relieves the pain, and the tooth is typically protected afterward with a crown.

What to expect

  • Numbing so you stay comfortable
  • Careful cleaning of the inside of the tooth
  • Sealing of the tooth
  • A plan to restore it, often with a crown

Every smile is different. Dr. Moon will recommend what is right for you after an exam.

Common questions about root canals

A root canal has a reputation it rarely deserves. Its goal is to relieve pain and save your natural tooth.

Is a root canal painful?
The area is numbed first, and most patients say the procedure feels much like having a filling placed. The treatment is meant to relieve the pain that an infected tooth was causing.
Why save the tooth instead of pulling it?
Your natural tooth is usually the best option for chewing and for keeping neighboring teeth in position. Saving it can also help you avoid more involved replacement work later.
What should I expect afterward?
Some tenderness for a few days is normal and usually settles. Call the office if swelling, a fever or severe pain develops.
